In Greek mythology a satyr is a rural creature with the head and body of a man and the ears, horns, and legs of a goat – oh, and a tail, too. The satyrs were rowdy, lesser deities and followers of Pan the all-encompassing god of nature, pastures, flocks and forests. Satyrs After the Hunt is a study for a very large painting entitled Pan. The word "pan-" (with a hyphen appended) descends to us from this god, and bears multiple meanings: All, any, everyone.
